A Meccan surah, Surah Al-Kafirun (Arabic: الكافرون), also called Surah Al-Kafiroun is named in English « The Disbelievers ». It takes its name from the content of the first verse: « O you disbelievers! », although it is not part of the proclamation, although it is not part of the proclamation. Al-kafirun are by definition all those who do not believe in the message of Islam.
It is Surah 109 according to the order of arrangement in the Holy Book of Islam, whereas in the chronological order of the revelations this surah occupies the 18th place. It was revealed after Surah Al-Ma'un. Comprising only 6 verses, Surah Al-Kafiroun is one of the briefest surahs of the Quran. These surahs represent a form of appeal addressed to the reader so that he may succeed in distinguishing the practices of the believer from those of the disbelievers. Moreover, the surahs at the end of the Quran are generally considered to belong to the oldest.
As previously mentioned, Surah Al-Kafiroun was proclaimed during the Meccan period, during the first part of the history of the Prophet (sws) before leaving Mecca, at a time when the first Muslims were persecuted by the polytheists. Surah 109 is said to have been revealed to the Messenger of Allah (sws) following the attempts on the part of the Quraysh to corrupt Him. It is indeed said that this surah was revealed when a group of disbelievers asked the Prophet (sws) to believe in their religion for a certain time.
According to Abdellah Ibn Abbas, the chiefs of the Quraysh proposed to the Holy Prophet (sws): « We will give you so much wealth that you would become the richest man in Mecca; we will give you in marriage any of the women who please you; we are ready to follow you and to obey you as our leader, on the sole condition that you do not speak ill of our gods. If this does not suit you, we will make you another proposal that will be as much to your advantage as to ours ».
The Messenger of God (sws) then answered them « Wait, let me see what my Lord commands on this matter ». It was thus that the revelation of Surah Al-Kafiroun came down.
Surah Al-Kafiroun relates the commandment of Allah not to compromise in matters of religion and faith.
The first verse refers to all the disbelievers of the whole world, although this was specifically revealed to the Messenger of Allah (sws) when the pagans of Quraysh asked him to worship their idols for a year, and in return, they would worship Allah the following year. The Quraysh had multiplied their proposals to the holy Prophet (sws), who found himself obliged to give them a clear and definitive answer (based on the word of God), to put an end to the hopes of an agreement that the chiefs of Quraysh wanted to seal. At that moment, Surah Al-Kafiroun was revealed, rejecting these false idols and polytheism. Surah 109 is therefore a declaration of liberation from Shirk, associationism, and a purification of the heart of all the believers.
Surah Al-Kafiroun was revealed in order to exonerate the Muslims from the religion of the disbelievers, from their rites, their worship and their gods, to express the fact that they do not endorse them. It is to tell them that Islam and koufr (disbelief) have nothing in common and that there is no possibility that they be combined and mixed into a single entity.
Whoever reads Surah 109, Allah forgives him, as well as his parents and his future children. It is recommended to read it regularly every day, and its reading has the spiritual merit of the reading of a quarter of the Quran. Moreover, it is also said that whoever sees himself reading Surah Al-Kafiroun in a dream will have solid faith in the Religion and in the Shari'a. Indeed, reciting Surah Al-Kafirun before sleeping is among the neglected sunnahs that allow one to ward off the temptation of polytheism.
According to certain hadiths, one of the advantages of this surah is that Satan will move away from the one who recites it, and the other advantage is that God will answer the one who calls upon Him if he recites it ten times when the sun rises, and also if one recites it a hundred times on Thursday evening, one will see the Prophet (sws) in one's dream.
The Prophet (sws) said: « When you go to bed to sleep, recite Qul ya-ayyuhal kafirun; this was the practice of the Prophet when he went to bed. » [Reported by al-Bazzar, Tabarani).
The Prophet also said: « Surah Al-Ikhlas (The pure monotheism) is equivalent to a third of the Quran, and Surah Al-Kafiroun is equivalent to its quarter » [Reported by Abdallah ibn 'Umar].
Al-Hareth Ben Jabla reports: I asked: "O Messenger of God, teach me something to say before sleeping?!" He answered me: "Say O disbelievers" for it is an immunity against polytheism". Reported by Ahmad in the interpretation of the Quran by Ibn Kathir.
